PRP Facial FAQS (Part 2)
PRP facials offer state-of-the-art skin rejuvenation by utilizing the patient’s own blood platelets to stimulate the skin’s natural regeneration process. The patient’s own concentrated growth factor stimulates the skin to produce collagen and elastin at an accelerated rate – which smoothes out wrinkles and lines, and improves skin tightness, tone and elasticity. The result is a dramatically more youthful appearance.
In this article Englewood, NJ aesthetic physician Dr. Hetal Gor answers patient’s frequently asked questions about PRP Facials.
Why does a PRP facial look bloody?
Social media photos of celebrities getting PRP “vampire” facials can look quite bloody and alarming. Rest assured this is done for shock value, and the process is not nearly as scary as it looks in these sensational Instagram posts.
There is very little blood drawn from the PRP Facial patient’s arm when preparing for a PRP Facial – only about 10cc. During the microneedling process, a minute amount of plasma residue remains on the surface of the face, giving it the bloody appearance.
How long do the effects of a PRP Facial last?
A PRP facial continues to improve skin tone, eliminate wrinkles and plump the face for several months once the process is completed. However, the overall results are sustainable for more than a year. Each patient’s level of skin damage will vary, so Dr. Gor may recommend multiple treatments, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart for the desired results.
How does a patient get ready for a PRP Facial?
No preparation is needed before a PRP Facial, other than avoiding sun exposure or sun burn prior to treatment. Of course, during the consult with Dr. Gor the patient should disclose any medication or supplements taken on a regular basis and discuss any pre-existing medical conditions. If the patient uses retinol or Retin A, they should discontinue applying the topical treatment before and after the PRP facial, until Dr. Gor clears it for use.
Who are the best candidates for PRP Facials?
Patients of all ages with all skin types can benefit from a PRP Facial. Dr. Gor uses PRP to treats patients in their teens with acne – as well as mature women in their 70s and beyond who are fighting the signs of aging. PRP is alo completely safe for patients with darker skin tones.
For those patients who have blood clotting or bleeding disorders, Dr. Gor offers several alternate facial therapies to avoid unnecessary risks that might be brought upon with PRP injections or microneedling.
Is it safe to get a PRP Facial?
Yes, PRP Facials are completely safe if performed by a licensed medical specialist. The therapy uses the patient’s own blood so it’s a natural treatment without the risk of having a reaction.
The PRP Facial is 100% natural with no side effects or reactions – because it is derived from the patient’s own blood. So it is safe for almost everybody.
Why should PRP Facials be done by a medical doctor?
Patients should never put themselves at risk by having a PRP Facial performed outside of a licensed medical facility. Sterile conditions and a reputable doctor’s expertise will ensure there is no risk of infection during the blood draw or PRP microneedling application. Salons and other non-medical providers simply do not provide the sterile clinical conditions that assure a safe experience.
Sadly, some people have risked exposure to HIV, infection and other disease by experimenting with “cheap” PRP Facials in Mexico – so Dr. Gor stresses the importance of having a licensed practitioner perform the procedure.
Are there other treatments besides PRP Facials that don’t use blood?
Some patients with medical conditions or those who just can’t stomach the sight of a little blood may not be good candidates for a PRP Facial. So, Dr. Gor offers several other skin treatment options in her Bergen County Med Spa to help counter the effects of aging without PRP microneedling, including chemical peels and laser and radiofrequency treatments.
