What is PRP Hair Loss Treatment?
PRP stands for “Platelet Rich Plasma” – which is the liquid portion of human blood that contains the body’s “growth factors.”
PRP has been used in sports medicine and joint regeneration treatments for decades. More recently PRP has been used to rejuvenate skin in the popular “Vampire Facial.”
Now, the regenerative power of the body’s natural PRP is being applied to the scalp – to rejuvenate the hair follicles and stimulate hair re-growth.
How Does PRP Hair Loss Treatment Work?
During your PRP Hair Loss Treatment in our Hoboken / Hackensack area Med Spa, your blood is drawn in the same way as a routine blood test. It is then placed in a centrifuge and spun to separate out the liquid plasma from the blood cells.
The plasma contains “platelets” which are rich in “growth factors” that can activate cellular renewal and repair – hence the name “Platelet Rich Plasma.”
The isolated plasma (PRP) can contain 8 times or more of the “growth factor” of normal blood. The PRP is then injected into the patient’s scalp – either by syringe or microneedling – where it goes to work renewing the dead and dormant hair follicles, and activating new hair growth.
Is PRP Hair Loss Treatment Effective?
Yes, for the right candidates, PRP Hair Loss Treatment can be very effective at both slowing hair loss, and stimulating the dormant hair follicles to begin producing strong, thick, healthy, hair again.
However, there are many causes of hair loss. While PRP hair loss treatment has proven effective on most types of hair loss, Dr. Gor will examine you to determine if PRP, LaseMD or another hair loss treatment is right for your specific type of hair loss.
Who is a Good Candidate for PRP Hair Loss Treatment?
Because PRP is 100% natural, it is generally safe and appropriate for almost any woman or man with thinning hair.
Generally, PRP Hair Loss Treatment works better on areas where there is thinning hair, rather than on completely bald areas. Typically, the earlier in the hair loss that treatments are begun, the better the results.
PRP is also a safe procedure for patients who are not good candidates for other types of hair loss treatments. Because it is 100% natural and non-pharmaceutical, it is even safe for pregnant or nursing mothers, cancer patients, and people with underlying medical conditions.
PRP Hair Loss Treatments are also ideal for women and men who do not want to undergo the pain, expense, tedious appointments, “doll-hair” appearance, and extended recovery period of hair transplant surgery. And, PRP can also help individuals with a thinning “crown” who are not good candidates for hair transplant surgery.
How Many PRP Hair Loss Treatments Will I Need?
Each patient’s hair loss is different. However, most of our Englewood, Hackensack and Hoboken patients undergo three initial PRP Hair Loss Treatments, spaced about one month apart.
After the initial three treatments, most patients schedule a PRP maintenance treatment at least once or twice a year – to ensure continued hair follicle health.
Is there any Downtime after PRP Hair Loss Treatment?
PRP Hair Loss Treatments are non-surgical and minimally invasive, so there is no downtime. Patients can resume their regular activities immediately after treatment, including driving or even going back to work.
However, patients should avoid strenuous exercise or other exertion for about 24 hours. And, of course, direct sunlight on the scalp should be avoided after treatment.
Does PRP Hair Loss Treatment Hurt?
PRP does not hurt any more than regular injections or microneedling. Dr. Gor can apply topical anesthetic to the area of the scalp being treated to ensure a comfortable procedure.
Typically, patients do not experience any lasting discomfort after their PRP treatment. However, a few individuals have reported mild soreness or slight swelling that disappears within a day or two.
When Will I See PRP Hair Loss Treatment Results?
Each patient’s hair regrowth pattern is different. But most PRP Hair Loss Treatment patients will begin to see some new hair regrowth with a month or two – with more dramatic results appearing between 3 to 6 months.
