Men’s Hair Loss Treatments
Hair loss affects men of all ages. Thinning hair or “baldness” can add years to a man’s appearance, and dramatically undermine his self-confidence and satisfaction with his look. Most people think that hair loss is simply caused by aging. But, in truth, the causes of men’s hair loss are much more complex than just getting older.
For most men, hair loss is “multifactorial” – meaning that there is not just a single cause of hair loss, but the result of a combination of factors. Male hair loss can be the result of heredity, hormones, stress, nutrition, disease, pharmaceuticals, and/or a combination of these and other factors.
In this article, board certified physician Dr. Hetal Gor discusses the common causes of men’s hair loss and explains the newest and most advanced hair loss treatments for men at Better U Medical Spa in Englewood & Jersey City.
Causes of Men’s Hair Loss
Heredity & Men’s Hair Loss
The most common type of hair loss in men is genetically inherited. Androgenetic alopecia – commonly known as “male pattern baldness” – is a hereditary condition that causes men to lose their hair gradually as they age. In the United States an estimated 50 million men suffer from this form of hair loss.
Men experiencing male pattern baldness typically see thinning hair in an “M” pattern on forehead and temples, and a bald spot on the crown.
Hormones & Men’s Hair Loss
Starting at puberty, young men begin producing androgen (male) hormones in a greater degree. These hormones help build muscles and develop male sex characteristics. However, androgens can also shorten the anagen phase of hair growth, resulting in shrinking of the hair follicles (follicular miniaturization) that results in balding.
Stress & Men’s Hair Loss
Physical stress on the body – including surgery, exposure to toxins, and more – can also cause or accelerate hair loss. Surprisingly, psychological stress can result in hair loss, too. Divorce, death of a loved one, financial problems, job loss, and even the stress of the pandemic can also lead to thinning hair.
Nutrition & & Men’s Hair Loss
Men who are not getting sufficient amounts of the right vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients can also suffer from loss of hair. For example, consuming insufficient protein can inhibit the body’s ability to build new hair follicles.
Disease & Men’s Hair Loss
Many medical conditions can cause men’s hair loss. Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune disorder that results in hair loss in small bald patches on the scalp as well as the body. If left untreated, it can advance into a complete loss of scalp hair, as well as a loss of all hair on the body.
Certain fungal skin infections (like ringworm), and bacterial infections (such as syphilis) can cause hair loss. And diseases that cause scarring (like lichen planus or lupus) can result in hair loss as well.
Medication & Men’s Hair Loss
Hair loss is also a common side effect of many prescription medications and medical treatments. High blood pressure, heart disease and arthritis medications can all also cause hair loss, as can chemotherapy.
Recreational drug usage can also cause hair loss. For example, cocaine usage can result in rapid weight loss which deprives the body of the necessary nutrients needed for growing healthy hair. The use of anabolic steroids for purposes of muscle-building can also cause a man’s hair to fall out.
Men’s Hair Loss Treatments
PRP for Men’s Hair Loss
Professional athletes – such Alex Rodriguez, Steph Curry, Tiger Woods, Jose Reyes & many others – have been using platelets (PRP) extracted from their own blood to heal sports injuries for many years.
Now the same cutting edge PRP technology is available at Better U Medical Spa in Englewood and Jersey City to treat hair loss and regrow hair. During this men’s hair restoration treatment, a small amount of blood is drawn from the patient and placed in a centrifuge. It is spun until the red and white blood cells separate from the platelets.
PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma, the portion of the blood that contains highly concentrated levels of the body’s natural growth factors. This concentrated PRP – which contains up to 8 times more growth factor than normal blood – is injected into the scalp in the areas of hair loss.
The concentrated PRP injections increase blood supply to the hair follicles and stimulate the body to repair dormant follicles to naturally regrow hair. And, because this powerful men’s medical hair loss treatment uses the body’s own processes, it is free of the dangerous side effects of harsh chemicals and medications such as Rogaine (Minoxidil) and Propecia.
LaseMD KeraLase Men’s Hair Loss Treatments
In addition to PRP hair restoration, Better U Medical Spa in Englewood and Jersey City also offers LaseMD® laser hair loss treatments with KeraLase.
Lase MD creates tiny “microchannels” in the scalp, which increases deep absorption of a special hair growth serum called KeraLase KeraFactor®. This proprietary formula contains a “bio-identical” synthetic version of the body’s own growth factors and proteins that are responsible for hair growth.
The KeraLase serum is comprised of peptides that are 1000 times more concentrated than those found in PRP. This quick, comfortable and easy hair loss treatment is typically recommended once every 2 weeks, for a total of 6 treatments. The growth factors and proteins rejuvenate damaged hair follicles and stimulate increased blood supply to the dormant hair follicles. This triggers natural hair regrowth, in addition to increasing the thickness of the individual hair shafts being produced.
